Today, all of this is the bridge and link to traditions that make it easier for everyone to get in touch with these ancient roots. Amongst luminarie (traditional decorative lights), processions, bands, fireworks, bonfires known as \u201cfocare\u201d, traditional dances such as \u201cpizziche\u201d and \u201ctarantate\u201d, as well as various tastings of typical dishes and local produce, let yourself go in this world of historic rituals. You could be surprised!<\/p>\n<p>Not to be missed in <strong>Leuca <\/strong>, on a <strong>Sunday in May<\/strong> that is fixed year by year, the event \u201c<strong>Ville in festa<\/strong>\u201d takes place, during which Santa Maria di Leuca\u2019s magnificent 19th century <strong>villas <\/strong>are opened to the public. During this event, it is possible to <strong>admire <\/strong>their historical and architectural particularities in a <strong>guided tour<\/strong> accompanied by tastings of local food and wine.<\/p>\n<p>A must see the feast to the <strong>Madonna in Leuca<\/strong>, that begins on <strong>August 14th<\/strong> when the statue of the <strong>Virgin Mary<\/strong> is taken to the <strong>Church of \u201cCristo Re\u201d<\/strong>. On the <strong>15th<\/strong>, the statue is then accompanied by a <strong>long and intense torch lit procession<\/strong> through the streets of the town, known as the \u201c<strong>intorciata<\/strong>\u201d, which ends at the sea. Once at the port, <strong>the statue is taken on board a fishing vessel<\/strong> drawn at random and decorated festively for the occasion. It is followed by numerous <strong>fishing boats<\/strong>, other vessels and the town\u2019s band and transports the statue to the <strong>marina di San Gregorio<\/strong> and then turns back.<br \/>\nOnce the boat has returned to Leuca there is a mass and to close the evening there is a <strong>spectacular fireworks display<\/strong>. These statuettes are crafted by able hands and embellish <strong>Christmas time<\/strong>. Whilst waiting for the festive season, it is possible to go back to pagan fire rituals: at <strong>Spongano <\/strong>(December 22nd) the \u201c<strong>Festa delle Panare<\/strong>\u201d takes place, during which decorated reed baskets full of olive oil residues are put on fire according to ancient rites that unite the sacred and profane\u2026 and Christmas is here. The magic of various <strong>nativity scenes<\/strong> reaches its peak with those at <strong>Tricase and Castro<\/strong> (December 25th), in <strong>\u201cliving\u201d nativity scenes<\/strong> with real animals and people full of light, which is a recurring theme at the \u201c<strong>focare<\/strong>\u201d: bonfires lit following ancient pagan propitiatory and purification rituals that the Church then Christianized. Bonfires are held everywhere \u2013 the most historic and the largest in Europe is that <strong>held at Novoli<\/strong> (January 16th and 17th) in honour of <strong>Sant\u2019Antonio dell\u2019Abate<\/strong> \u2013 darkness is overcome and evil spirits frightened by so much light fly away. This blessing of candles derives from the ancient <strong>roman Lupercalia rituals<\/strong>. At <strong>Martano<\/strong>, on the following Sunday, an <strong>ancient fair <\/strong>takes place in which mostly horses are traded. And then, in a flash, it\u2019s <strong>carnival time<\/strong>: the joyful and merry procession of <strong>decorated carts in Gallipoli<\/strong> (Shrove Tuesday and preceding Saturday and Sunday) has its roots in the roman Saternali rites. To top it all off, there is the <strong>feast for Saint Joseph<\/strong> \u2013 which in Giurdignano (March 19th) actually takes place in people\u2019s private homes. 13 dishes make up the traditional meal that is served to people dressed as Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary and other Saints. Or in <strong>Calimera<\/strong>, where on Easter Monday, there is the rite of passing <strong>through a hole in a stone<\/strong> situated in the chapel of <strong>San Vito.<\/strong> Or the ancient pilgrimage that in April leaves Lecce to arrive at the sanctuary in Santa Maria di Leuca. Then there are the typical dishes of the peasant tradition that appear in the first festivals and propitiatory rites \u2013 that were once pagan \u2013 to invoke <strong>abundance <\/strong>and <strong>fertility <\/strong>such as \u201c<strong>La Primavera de lu Masciu\u201d<\/strong> in <strong>Sannicola <\/strong>(2nd\/3rd week of May). These festivals invite you to spend time outside, the warm season has arrived. Amongst many, the feast day in <strong>Calimera <\/strong>(21 giugno) has a unique tradition in which <strong>torches made of crepe paper<\/strong> by the town\u2019s inhabitants are lit in the town centre. A few days later \u201c<strong>Borgoinfesta<\/strong>\u201d begins in <strong>Borgagne <\/strong>(24th\/26th June) considered the opening of the summer season; the night dedicated to <strong>saint John <\/strong>is spent amongst <strong>jesters, acrobats, fire-eaters and jugglers<\/strong> during which it is possible to learn the \u201c<strong>Riti della Rugiada<\/strong>\u201d(Rites of Dew) linked to the magical night of June 24th. Then in <strong>Galatina <\/strong>there is the Feast dedicated to <strong>Saint Peter and Saint Paul<\/strong> (June 28th-30th), in which <strong>tambourines <\/strong>and \u201c<strong>pizziche<\/strong>\u201d, traditional folk music, frenetically yet soothingly accompany the \u201c<strong>tarantolate<\/strong>\u201d (girls whom in the past were believed to have been bitten by spiders inducing frenetic dance-like movements) in rhythms to which it is impossible to not move\u2026 have we been bitten too?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-edab574d76fa6b5f7 fusion-toggle-has-divider\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_edab574d76fa6b5f7\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"edab574d76fa6b5f7\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-4630-1\" data-target=\"#edab574d76fa6b5f7\" href=\"#edab574d76fa6b5f7\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon awb-icon-minus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon awb-icon-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">JULY<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"edab574d76fa6b5f7\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_edab574d76fa6b5f7\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-764 size-medium\" style=\"margin: 0px 60px 20px 0px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/luglio-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.portodileuca.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/luglio-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.portodileuca.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/luglio-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.portodileuca.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/luglio-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.portodileuca.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/luglio.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The season is full of <strong>food festivals<\/strong> and this month the skills of those who mount the \u201c<strong>luminarie<\/strong>\u201d decorative lights are unparalleled in the feast dedicated to <strong>Santa Domenica at Scorrano <\/strong>(July 5th\/7th): thousands of small lights reproduce icons of saints, and famous monuments and buildings. The <strong>national firework display competition<\/strong>, in which the fireworks are <strong>let off to music<\/strong>, make this feast day a real must; amazement and the enchantment of this event will stay with you for ever. Another moving event is the light at sunset at <strong>Gallipoli <\/strong>during which a <strong>procession <\/strong>of boats that follow the <strong>statue of Saint Christina<\/strong> open the festivities dedicated to this saint (July 23rd\/25th), in a religiously silent tradition of over 200 years. With similar religious devotion, at <strong>Martignano <\/strong>for the feast of <strong>San Pantaleone<\/strong> (July 26th\/27th), the faithful cover the statue of the saint in gold and money. These hordes then go for a devout stop at <strong>Otranto <\/strong>(August 14th) for the \u201c<strong>Festa dei SS. The closing concert of the <strong>Notte della Taranta at Melpignano<\/strong> (August 27th) is the climax of a series of concerts held throughout the summer all over Salento in which the rhythm of the traditional \u201cpizzica\u201d music runs through your veins. The feast dedicated to <strong>Sant\u2019Oronzo in Lecce<\/strong> (August 24th\/28th) brings the summer season to an end: the hundreds of stalls selling <strong>typical local handicrafts<\/strong> and produce are captivating. Whilst toasting the grape harvest with <strong>excellent wines<\/strong>, eating local cuisine and dancing to local and non-local live music, it is possible to <strong>see the frenzied battle using no less than celery plants<\/strong> for a weapon known as \u201clanciu te lu lacciu\u201d. From the profane to the sacredness of the procession of boats in <strong>Otranto <\/strong>(1st Sunday of September) that sees fishermen and sailors following a boat carrying the \u201c<strong>Madonna dell\u2019Altomare<\/strong>\u201d into the port; and the sanctity of the feast dedicated to <strong>San Giuseppe da Copertino<\/strong>, celebrated in his native town (September 16th \/19th) amongst spectacular luminarie lights and firework displays. So together with dishes prepared with olives and other local foods, one can smell decidedly northern risotto, polenta and Lambrusco. A delightful mix that underlines salento\u2019s hospitable nature. The same hospitality that can be found at the Fiera di Ognissanti (November 1st) for <strong>All Saints\u2019 day in Carpignano<\/strong>, linked to the peasant tradition of trading animals. <strong>Since the year 1000<\/strong>, as winter approaches, it is possible to find products of all kinds.
